So Undercover

Spy is directed and written by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Help) and stars Melissa McCarthy (Identity Thief, The Heat, Bridesmaids), Rose Byrne (Insidious, Bad Neighbours), Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, Side Effects), Miranda Hart (Miranda, Call the Midwife), Allison Janney (Tammy, The DUFF) and Jason Statham (Furious 7, Parker). 'A desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent diabolical global disaster.' Can Spy make it a hatrick comedy hit for Paul Feig? 

Spy has one of the best 'spy-movie' plots out of them all - it is smart, clever, gruesome and extremely funny. The story may seem simple from the trailer but it takes a whole new direction which is quite refreshing. It is also nice to see a female kicking butt as a Spy and not just sitting behind a computer telling the man what to do. The twists are extremely unpredictable - there are so many of them towards the end that you start questioning whats real or fake and you also start making predictions for possible twists in your mind that don't happen - they're almost unthinkable. Spy buts the Intelligence into the CIA. 

What I really liked about the film is that is isn't a cheap comedy film that spoofs spy movies - you can tell the money has been invested into the film to make it feel real. The action is there, the stunts are there, the special effects are there and the gruesome injuries are there too - fantastic! It ticks all the boxes in the comedy genre as well a the action genre. Some of my favourite jokes from the movie include McCarthy's rendition of 'Hey Mickey' and the hilarious chemistry between McCarthy and Byrne. 

The acting is also impressive - all of these action starts actually want to be in the movie. Jason Statham willingly jokes about himself and how his past movies are so generic and the stunts he carries out are so unbelievable. Jude Law is also superb and is a great secret agent. Some have said that Miranda Hart is unfunny in the flick but I disagree - she had a much bigger role than I thought she would and she provided some the biggest laughs - maybe her humour has an acquired taste? Rose Byrne really shows her diversity as an actress and really kicks butt as a villain - her funny side that she showed in Bad Neighbours is also seen here. However, despite the impressive cast, the star of the show is Melissa McCarthy and Spy has become my favourite movie by her and I have definitely forgiven her for the terrible Tammy which made it on to my worst of 2014 list - this is likely to make it onto my BEST of 2015 list. McCarthy is extremely likeable and like Rebel Wilson, she never really changes her character, but why should she? We love both of them as they are. Feig clearly knows what works for McCarthy. 

Spy might just be my favourite movie of the year so far. With hilarious jokes that are spread throughout and an impressive production value that takes itself seriously as an action and a comedy movie - Spy is Comedic, Intelligent & Awesome. Byrne and McCarthy are brilliant and are supported excellently by Statham, Law and Hart. The plot has some great twists and turns and the movie is incredibly fast paced - Spy is Superb, Perfect & Yes - you should go and see it!
