Mother's Day (2016)

Celebrate the one day that connects us all.
Mother's Day is directed by Garry Marshall (Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve) and stars Jennifer Aniston (Friends, We're the Millers), Kate Hudson (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Bride Wars), Julia Roberts (Notting Hill, Closer), Jason Sudeikis (We're the Millers, Horrible Bosses) and Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland, The Longest Ride). "Three generations come together in the week leading up to Mother's Day".  Valentine's Day was a huge hit, New Year's Eve was a solid performer - where does Mother's Day rank?

Mother's Day is a clear example of a film that no effort has gone into whatsoever - the acting, writing, directing, comedy - it's all below the belt and Mother's Day is definitely a film that belongs in the trash. I wasn't a fan of Valentine's Day but I did like New Year's Eve - Mother's Day is by far the worst out of the three and hopefully Marshall never makes another one of these films again.

Mother's Day really does have a great cast - however, like most of Marshall's films - those actors are only here for the pay cheque and their performances are definitely just phone calls in. Jennifer Aniston is someone that I had faith in as I think she was great in We're the Millers and I think she is just a really likeable actress - however, Aniston could not save this sinking ship and honestly, her performance was not even borderline good - some of her scenes were terrible (the one where she is screaming in the car was painful to watch). I thought Kate Hudson was actually ok in this film - her character was likeable and there was nothing about her performance that she should be ashamed of (but she should be ashamed to be starring in this movie). Julia Roberts wins the award for the worst wig in a film in 2016 - her wig was extremely irritating and did not look realistic at all. Nobody in this film had a performance that is worth raving about - to be honest, hardly anyone actually made any effort.

Mother's Day has pretty much no plot line - every character does have their own sub-plot but all of those are very typical and without seeing the film, you would probably be able to guess what those sub-plots are. Whilst watching this film it also had me wondering whether Mother's Day is actually that big of a deal - is it worthy of having a film made all about it? Characters in this film are building floats for a Mother's Day parade - I know we don't have those in the UK but Mother's Day is certainly not as big of a deal as this film makes out. The plot was also very predictable - you could guess the twists and turns it was going to take from a mile off. There was just no effort made in the writing at all - to be honest, I couldn't even give you an idea for a film based on Mother's Day which just shows that this film was completely unnecessary and didn't need to be made at all.

The film wasn't even funny - there were maybe 2 or 3 moments where I did laugh but for the rest of the 2 hour run time, the film was dull and all of the jokes fell flat. This didn't help that many of the film's jokes were extremely racist - audiences don't find that funny anymore. I thought Mother's Day definitely has a very old fashioned view. For these films to evolve and remain successful, they need to smarten up and fit in with the views of society today.

Mother's Day is a terrible film - it really has nothing going for it. I can't give you an example of an area in this film where effort has been made because no effort has been made at all. The big name talent are only there for the pay cheques and the writing is very lazy. Mother's Day is a film that didn't need to be made and I am glad that hardly anyone went to see it. This definitely will be making an appearance on the bottom 10 of the year - however, this film doesn't deserve to be called the worst film of the year as no effort was made to make it bad - Dirty Grandpa and Alice Through the Looking Glass deserve to be higher as they actually made an effort. I do not want a Father's Day film or a Thanksgiving film - please just stop here as this little series is dead.
