Horrible Bosses 2 (2014)

New Crime, Same Tools
Directed and written by Sean Anderson (We're The Millers, That's My Boy), Horrible Bosses 2 is about 'Dale, Kurt and Nick who decide to start their own business but things don't go as planned because of a slick investor, prompting the trio to pull off a harebrained and misguided kidnapping scheme'. The film stars Jason Bateman (Identity Thief), Jason Sudeikis (We're the Millers), Charlie Day (Pacific Rim), Jennifer Anniston (Cake, We're the Millers), Jamie Foxx (The Amazing Spiderman 2) and Chris Pine (Star Trek, Into the Woods). Will Horrible Bosses 2 live up to its name and be HORRIBLE or will it be a pleasant surprise?
Even though Horrible Bosses 2 is by no means the best comedy film that I've ever seen, it certainly isn't the worst either. I was actually pleasantly surprised by this film as I started watching it believing it could be like the terrible Identity Thief. I also wasn't a huge fan of the first Horrible Bosses - in some aspects, I liked this one more. Horrible Bosses 2 has nothing to do with Horrible Bosses - the 3 men don't have any bosses - the people they are trying to sabotage this time are investors - maybe 'Horrible Investors' would be a more suitable title (although its no where near as catchy).
The story for this film was quite good - I thought it was quite original for a comedy film as I haven't seen anything similar to it in recent years. However, towards the end of the film - although the final act had the potential to be excellent, it was executed quite poorly and was a little messy - the majority of the films plot holes came from this point. Some of my favourite scenes include towards the start of the film when the factory is being built - I thought this was done really smoothy. I also felt it was done well in sync with the music that was edited in (Can't Hold Us by Macklemore). Throughout the film, I also liked the use of 'Roar' by Katy Perry. I thought it was quite interesting for a comedy to films to have themes and meanings - whenever the song played, it represented hope and optimism. SPOILER - This is proven when at the end, the ring tone of the Katy Perry song saves the day. I also generally liked the use of music during the film - each song that was used, was the perfect choice for each moment.
However, the biggest problem with this film is that it wasn't that funny. Yes - I laughed a few times throughout but I always believe that you shouldn't go more than 5 minutes without laughing when watching a good comedy film. Horrible Bosses is more like a Marvel film (not in quality) - it mixes action with little slices of humour. However, the film is tagged as a comedy - it is one that isn't that funny. I also didn't feel like a was watching a top quality film - it just felt a little dumb but fun - it knew that it wasn't going to be that great so it didn't bother trying.
The cast for this film is very likeable. Bateman, Sudeikis, Day and Anniston all return and are all fantastic. Each of their characters has something unique about them which makes them memorable - something that not all comedy films have. Foxx and Pine are new additions to the cast and are great. Pine takes a good turn as a villain but Foxx is a little iffy throughout.
Even if its short of laughs and not about horrible bosses, Horrible Bosses 2 is still a fun watch with a likeable cast, a promising plot and smart music choices.
