The End of Earth Will Not Be the End of Us
Directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception) and starring Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club, Mud), Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables, The Dark Knight Rises) and Jessica (Zero Dark Thirty, Mama), Interstellar has been named one of the greatest movies of all time. 'A team of explorers travel through a wormhole in an attempt to ensure humanity's survival.' - Nolan has such an excellent resume, surely this will be a guaranteed hit?
For me, the Jury is still out on this film, I don't really know whether I enjoyed it or hated it. However, what I do know that it is way too long - my attention was lost at times and because of the type of films this is, you need to be paying attention the whole time - this made me feel confused and I didn't really understand what was going on. Now, both Inception and The Dark Knight Trilogy were successful at keeping my attention and the former is known for being hard to understand. Also, the story for Interstellar was very interesting and realistic up until the last act where things just went in a whole new direction - has Nolan's intelligence in films gone too far? This made the film feel very far fetched and it lost my attention again. However, I did like that the story kept moving even if it did take 40 minutes for it to move anywhere.
The special effects in Interstellar definitely deserve the Oscar. They were really amazing - what I liked is that I was expecting them to be exactly the same as 'Gravity' - however, as Interstellar visits a lot of planets and locations, the special effects really do vary and are fantastic. Interstellar is visually stunning. However, unfortunately, the same can't be said for the sound of the film. It was silent which did help to make it more realistic but at times you would hear a 'popping sound' which made it feel like the sound crew were just pressing play at some points.
The acting is definitely a credibility to this film. Mathew McConaughey holds the film very well and is faultless. However, I believe the stars of the show are Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. The latter being really impressive. There was nobody that gave a poor performance in the film. However, I also want to praise Mackenzie Foy who was excellent in this film and has a promising future.
I also feel that Interstellar left a lot of loose ends and had many plot holes - some things weren't really explained and 'just happened' and other things were so far fetched. Also, the ending was good and not as effective as Inception - the film actually concluded which was satisfying. However, the third act was my favourite even if it was the most far fetched as it was the most attention grabbing.
Interstellar is a really visually appealing film - the special effects are fantastic. The story is good and the acting is excellent. However, Interstellar has all the ingredients for a masterpiece of a film but just doesn't bake them very well. This is Nolan's weakest effort to date as he has clearly tried to be too clever. Interstellar has an effective third act that doesn't quite match up with the other 2 acts which are slow at times. Interstellar needs to 'go further' to deserve the acclaim it has received - I was disappointed.
