UK Box Office August 28-30: STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Goes Straight to Top, WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS gets Unfriended!

12:46 PM

Opening at number 1 this weekend and sending Paper Towns 78% down was Straight Outta Compton. The music bio-pic took in $3.82 million this weekend which fits in very nicely to recent August releases. Hitman: Agent 47 didn't do that great though, taking in $1.47 million which put it in 3rd.

The only other opener within the top 10 was 45 Years which took the number 10 spot and earned $505K. Zac Efron flick We Are Your Friends failed to even make the cut for the top 10 which matches its dismal US release.

Here is the top 10:
1. Straight Outta Compton - $3.82 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $3.82 million
2. Inside Out - $1.84 million - Week 6 - Down 14% - Total: $51.61 million
3. Hitman: Agent 47 - $1.47 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $1.47 million
4. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - $1.36 million - Week 5 - Down 15% - Total: $28.60 million
5. Pixels - $1.02 million - Week 3 - Down 20% - Total: $9.85 million
6. The Man From U.N.C.L.E - $1.01 million - Week 3 - Down 29% - Total: $7.68 million
7. Sinister 2 - $872,304 - Week 2 - Down 47% - Total: $3.76 million
8. Paper Towns - $693,356 - Week 2 - Down 78% - Total: $5.21 million
9. Minions - $540,985 - Week 10 - Down 10% - Total: $69.22 million
10. 45 Years - $506,977 - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $506,977

The top 10 made $13.13 million this week which is down 9.2% on last weekend and is also down 13% on the same time frame last year which was also quite a slow and quiet weekend with no major releases.

The critically acclaimed music bio-pic Straight Outta Compton did solid business in the UK this weekend, taking the top spot with $3.82 million. This is a fantastic debut for a film that wouldn't typically appeal to the UK market - Straight Outta Compton is much more likely to have a stronger second week drop than fellow recent chart toppers Fantastic Four, Pixels and Paper Towns. Straight Outta Compton has also got out of the gate early before awards season officially starts which may mean it becomes the audience favourite. I would assume that Straight Outta Compton will surpass the $10 million mark before the end of its run.

Staying in second place for another week is Inside Out. The critically acclaimed animation took in $1.84 million which is down just 14% on last weekend. Throughout its 6 weeks of release, the film has made $51.6 million in the UK and still has a likely chance at passing $55 million before the end of its run. Inside Out has officially passed the $700 million mark worldwide and could reach $800 million after its been released in China.

The second highest debut this weekend came from Hitman: Agent 47 which took 3rd place. The sequel nobody really wanted took in $1.47 million this weekend which is around $1 million lower than the original film's opening. The first film took in $7.5 million at the UK box office - with terrible reviews, Hitman: Agent 47 will be lucky to reach $4 million.

Staying at 4th place for another week this weekend is Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. The film dropped just 15% which is another excellent hold. So far, the film has took in $28.6 million and is on track to close with around $32-35 million in the UK. Those strong reviews have obviously helped to keep rogue nation in the top 5 for its 5 weeks of release!

Jumping back into the top 5 after a steep 70% drop last weekend is Pixels. The Adam Sandler movie surprisingly only dropped 20% this weekend which is a very good hold - it is probably the choice live action family movie for the remainder of the school holidays as it literally has no other competition. Pixels took in $1.02 million this weekend which means that it has made $9.85 million in the UK so far. I predict Pixels will close with around $12 million by the end of its run.

6. The Man From U.N.C.L.E - another great hold for the spy flick. Prediction: $10 million.

7. Sinister 2 - another horror film avoids dropping 60% in its second weekend - maybe that isn't a trend anymore? Prediction: $4.5-5 million.

8. Paper Towns - one of the biggest second week drops of the year. Will we ever get to look for Alaska? Prediction: $6-7 million.

9. Minions - 10 weeks in the top 10 and it joined the billion dollar club! Prediction: $70.5-72 million.

10. 45 Years - a critically acclaimed indie film enters the top 10. Prediction: $1-1.5 million.

--. We Are Your Friends - luckily this film didn't have too big of a budget - what a financial disappointment.
