A Hero Will Rise.
This review contains Spoilers
Sausage Party is directed by Greg Tiernan (Thomas & Friends) and Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Madagascar 3). The film features the voices of Seth Rogen (Bad Neighbours, The Interview), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Despicable Me 2), Michael Cera (Juno, Scott Pilgrim vs The World) and many others. "A sausage strives to discover the truth about his existence". Sausage Party is the first mainstream film of its kind - will it spark a new craze or is this film the beginning AND the end of R rated animated films?
Wow....This film left me speechless. My thoughts towards the film are still quite muddled but Sausage Party definitely isn't tame when it comes to sexual and violent scenes. The voice work is very good - Rogen proves once again why he is the most successful male comedian in film today. The animation is of an excellent standard but the dialogue and what is actually happening on screen crosses the line completely...but it's kind of funny. I liked Sausage Party and this is a positive review but this definitely isn't for naive people or those who are easily offended.
Like all animated films, I am going to start by commenting on the quality of the animation. Sausage Party keeps up with the big studios as the animation is of a very good standard - as if Sausage Party has better animation than a film such as Norm of the North that was aimed at kids?? The film is bright and colourful and all of the food characters are well personified and realised. It's hard to praise the films visuals as what is actually happening on screen is outrageous. I'll just leave this section at the film being well animated.
The voice work in the film is also very strong. Seth Rogen plays Seth Rogen but continues to do an excellent job doing that. Kristen Wiig is also very good and her character Brenda may be heavily sexualised but she has some development to give her a personality which was nice. The voice cast is so large but Rogen and Bell are definitely the stand outs. I also liked Michael Cera. To be honest, the voice cast did such a brilliant job that it doesn't matter who voiced each character as they became their characters - the talent became lost in the character. However, once again, it is hard to praise Sausage Party's voice work as what is being said is outrageous (do you see a theme?).
So what makes Sausage Party so outrageous? Well, I actually thought the film was pretty tame until the final act but in the last 20 minutes, it takes it to a whole new level. The final act of Sausage Party is the equivalent to porn. However, this scene did make one of the most memorable cinema experiences as the crowd were 'ooooing' and 'aaahing' at each cut of this infamous scene. Sex jokes are throughout and are funny sometimes but they do occasionally fall flat as the film does overload itself with sexual references. Sausage Party is also an extremely violent film - it goes pretty dark with references to World War 2, a man being beheaded and the food killing humans in disgusting ways. Once again, I thought the film was pretty tame in this aspect until the final act where it took it to a whole new level. It was hard to find some of the 'violent' jokes funny as they were very inappropriate. Sausage Party's humour is very crude and heavily based on sex - the type of comedy that is lazy. However, there were some more intelligent jokes that included Meat Loaf and Stephen Hawking - hilarious! Some may call Sausage Party extremely offensive but everyone is targeted so that kind of cancels it all out - if you are easily offended though, stay away from Sausage Party.
Apart from the film crossing the line numerous times, there are a few other flaws that stopped me loving Sausage Party. I thought the film was pretty slow and it only really lived up to the hype in that final act. Sausage Party also had a similar problem to The Secret Life of Pets - the unique novelty does become old quite quick. I was also a little underwhelmed to see the majority of the film took place in the supermarket and not in the real world which is what the trailer suggested. I don't think this was the best story for this idea but it was still a satisfying flick.
Sausage Party has done something remarkable, it has convinced mainstream audiences to pay to watch porn in masses. The jokes aren't all great with only a few big laughs. However, the concept is fun at first but does soon wear off. This is definitely the most outrageous film of the year and that third act has provided me with a cinema experience I will not forget. The animation is of a good quality and the voice actors do an excellent job. I think it is incredible that a film has been able to have such a big impact - it was so shocking! Join the party*. As Troy and Gabriella would say...this is definitely the start of something new....
*if you are not easily offended, not naive, not under the age of admittance, can deal with lots of sexual references and some religious undertones
