SPRING BREAK FOREVER!
Labelled as ‘THIS YEAR’S MOST OUTRAGEOUS WILDEST FILM’, Spring Breakers is a movie experience like no other! Directed and written by ‘indie’ director Harmony Korine (Trash Humpers, Gummo), the film tells the story of 4 college girls (Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine) who rob a restaurant so they can go on Spring Break. After days of partying, drinking and taking drugs they are arrested but then soon bailed out by a crazy drug and arms dealer (James Franco). After spending time with their hypnotic new friend, it starts to become unclear of how far the girls will go to experience a Spring Break that they will never forget.
You will either love or hate this film- if you are familiar with the director’s previous work then you will probably understand and appreciate not just the story but the editing, audio and just how beautiful this film really is. After watching this, the factor that you will definitely never forget is James Franco’s outstanding performance. The way he executes his role of Alien is tremendous so much so that in 10 years’ time it will probably be looked at as iconic; he really transforms into a rapping, drug-dealing gangster. Let’s not forget the 4 girls (2 of which are ex-Disney starlets) who impress also. Out of them all, Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place, Getaway) who plays the naïve ‘Faith’ really stands out. Even though I feel she is underused, this film really shows she is a versatile and brilliant actress.
Now let’s talk about that weirdly brilliant Britney Spears sequence. The scene is so random and wrong that it surprisingly works! It is really gruesome and aggressive which is really what makes it such a jaw-dropping moment as the song used ‘Everytime’ is an ‘inspiring’ ballad. That brings me on to the editing- this is what makes some viewers dislike the film. Some audio clips that were said at the start of the film are repeated numerous times later on – this also happens with some of the footage too. In my opinion, the editing is what really makes this film such a work of art!
Don’t get me wrong, this film has sold itself as a ‘Project X’ type of movie so make sure you are aware that it is more of a ‘cult’ film that is targeted at a niche audience. This is totally different to what any of the actors/actresses have starred it before – these ‘good girls’ truly ‘go bad’.
This film will entertain you. This film will horrify you. But one thing is for sure that Spring Breakers is a masterpiece that is not to be missed.
5 STARS.
