UK Box Office January 16-18: TAKEN 3 Repeats, AMERICAN SNIPER Blasts into Second
10:39 AM
Despite dropping to number 4 in the US, Taken 3 held on to the top spot in the UK this weekend. The critically-hated final instalment took $4.99 million this weekend.
3 Oscar favourites debuted this week. American Sniper took $3.83 million, Whiplash made $869K and Wild scored $795K. The Testament of Youth also debuted with $633K.
The Top 10 made $20.92 million this weekend. That is down 23% to last weekend. It is also down approximately 15% on the same weekend frame last year.
Taken 3 dropped 51% this week but still managed to hold on to the top spot. However, this is similar to Taken 2's second week drop: 49.5%. The film has now made $18.52 million over 2 weeks. It is still on track for making about $30 million total. Taken 3 is unlikely to keep up being number 1 for much longer.
In second place, American Sniper opened to a great $3.83 million - this is fantastic for a film that has only recently got a lot of attention. With award nominations, strong reviews from critics and great word of mouth. American Sniper could earn over $15 million.
The Theory of Everything held on to third place this week. Holding very well - only dropping 5.6%. The film made $3.53 million this weekend. The film has now made $18.1 million total. With award season on its way, The Theory of Everything has a chance of cracking $25 million.
Into the Woods slipped 2 spots this week. The film dropped 19.3% which is quite a solid hold. This weekend, the film made $3.03 million. The film has now made $8.14 million. It is still on track to close with $10-17 million.
Paddington held on to fifth place this week. The film dropped 25.7% which is another good hold - this film has legs in the UK! Paddington took in $1.43 million. The film has now made a whopping $51.63 million in the UK. Paddington is still on track for passing $55 million,
The final instalment of the Hobbit trilogy slipped 2 spots to number 6 this week. The film made $971K which is down 49.8% from last week. Battle of the Five Armies has now made over $61 million in the UK. However, it is likely to close behind the Desolation of Smaug's $70 million. Expect it to reach $63 million maximum.
Oscar favourite Whiplash debuted at number 7 with $869K. This is great for a film that opened to less than 250 cinemas. With awards season, fantastic reviews and strong word of mouth, Whiplash could reach $1.5-2 million.
Birdman held on to number 8 this week. The film made $835K and dropped just a third from last week - another brilliant hold! The film has now made over $6 million . $8 million could be a realistic number for this awards favourite.
Wild debuted at number 9 with $795K. This is good for a film that opened to less than 300 cinemas. With award nominations, Wild should made about $1.3 million
Finally, The Testament of Youth debuted at number 10 with $633K. This is also good for a film that opened to less than 300 cinemas. However, Testament hasn't claimed any award nods so this may not reach a million.
Look out for EX MACHINA next weekend!
