Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Red Riding Hood) and starring Drew Barrymore (Donnie Darko, Scream) and Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, Little Miss Sunshine), Miss You Already seems to be one of the top contenders for the biggest tear-jerker. "The friendship between two life-long girlfriends is put to the test when one starts a family and the other falls ill". Can Miss You Already be a smaller film that makes a big impression or will it be a small film that makes no impression?
The Revenant is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman, Babel) and stars Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception, The Wolf of Wall Street), Tom Hardy (Legend, Mad Max: Fury Road) and Will Poulter (We're the Millers, The Maze Runner). "In the 1820s, a frontiersman, Hugh Glass, sets out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling". The Revenant has had production problems but is also DiCaprio's big shot for an Oscar - which will be clearer? The Revenant opens on December 25 2015 (limited) in the US and January 15 2016 in the UK.
Bring Him Home
The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien) and stars Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity, Saving Private Ryan), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Mama), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Despicable Me 2), Jeff Daniels (Dumb & Dumber, Looper), Kata Mara (Fantastic Four, 127 Hours) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Z for Zachariah). "During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive". Is The Martian destined to be another huge Ridley Scott property like Alien and Blade Runner or will it be a disappointment like Prometheus?

UK Box Office September 25-27: EVEREST Stays at the Peak, MISS YOU ALREADY Misses Top Spot
8:32 AMStaying at number 1 for a second week was Everest. The film managed to stay at the peak by just sliding very slightly. Miss You Already wasn't a huge hit but wasn't a big miss either - the film opened where it needed to - number 4.
Also opening in the top 10 was Solace (6th) and Pixels reentered the chart at number 9.
Man Up is directed by Ben Palmer (The Inbetweeners) and stars Lake Bell (What Happens in Vegas, No Strings Attached) and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz). "A single woman who's mistaken for a stranger's blind date, leads to her finding the perfect boyfriend". Man Up is a British comedy which isn't a genre that is known to produce very good films (see Love, Rosie)...can Man Up be an exception?
The Big Short is directed by Adam McKay (Step Brothers, Anchorman) and stars Brad Pitt (World War Z, Fight Club) , Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, American Hustle) , Ryan Gosling (Drive, Only God Forgives) , Steve Carell (Foxcatcher, The Office) and a very small role from Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers, Rudderless). "Four outsiders in the world of high-finance who predicted the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000's decide to take on the big banks for their lack of foresight and greed". The Big Short is like Moneyball meets American Hustle - will it meet the quality of those films? The Big Short hits US Cinemas 23rd December 2015 and UK Cinemas 22nd January 2016.

UK Box Office September 18-20: EVEREST Summits Chart, A WALK IN THE WOODS Gets Lost
2:33 PMTaking the top spot this weekend was the first big release of Awards season: Everest. The film summited the chart and took in $4.85 million. No other films debuted within the top 5.
Also opening in the top 10 was A Walk in the Woods which took 8th, Battle of Britain which took 9th and Bill which took 10th.
Never Let Go
Everest is directed by Baltasar Kormakur (Contraband, 2 Guns) and stars Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Josh Brolin (W., Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Jake Gyllenhaal (Southpaw, Nightcrawler) and Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Imitation Game). "A climbing expedition on Mt. Everest is devastated by a severe snow storm". Will Everest be able to kick off the awards season with a bang or will it just be a dull and long trip?
So Awards season has begun with studios releasing films they hope to become the most acclaimed of the year. These films aren't usually huge box office wise but are still usually worth watching. I have to admit, this time of the movie year is probably my least favourite as all the films require a lot of attention and are usually very tense/dramatic. Even if you want a break from these type of films, the only other films out that aren't blockbusters are usually rubbish. This year, I believe we have a good balance of smaller films and big films - in this post, I will talk abut the smaller films I can't wait to see.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 is directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, I Am Legend) and stars Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle), Josh Hutcherson (Epic, Red Dawn), Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect, The LEGO Movie) and Julianna Moore (Still Alice, Seventh Son). "After being symbolized as the "Mockingjay", Katniss Everdeen and District 13 engage in an all-out revolution against the autocratic Capitol". The film will be the 4th and final in the franchise but will it be the best? The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 hits UK cinemas November 19th 2015 and US Cinemas November 20th 2015.
The Jungle Book is directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Chef) and is the next live action Disney fairytale to be released from the house of mouse. The film stars Scarlett Johansson (Avengers, Lucy), Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Prometheus), Bill Murray (Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters) and Ben Kingsley (Shutter Island, Hugo). "An orphan boy is raised in the jungle with the help of a pack of wolves, a bear, and a black panther". In my opinion, Disney hasn't made a wrong movie with their live action fairytales as of yet...will The Jungle Book be another win? The Jungle Book hits cinemas April 15th 2016.
Creed is directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) and is the next instalment in the Rocky franchise. The film stars Sylvester Stallone (Rocky, The Expendables), Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four, That Awkward Moment) and Tessa Thompson (Selma, Dear White People). "The former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa serves as a trainer and mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed". So the first trailer for this movie was a roaring success, can trailer 2 match it? Creed hits cinemas in the USA November 25th 2015 and in the UK February 19th 2016.
No One Loves You Like Your Grandparents
This review may contain slight spoilers
The Visit is directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs). The film stars Olivia DeJonge (Hiding, The Sisterhood of Night), Ed Oxenbould (Alexander and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Paper Planes), Peter McRobbie (Lincoln, Spider-Man 2), Deanna Dunagan (Have a Little Faith, Running Scared) and Kathryn Hahn (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, We're the Millers). "A single mother finds that things in her family's life go very wrong after her two young children visit their grandparents". The director of this film hasn't made a good film for years, is the time now or is that just wishful thinking?
Allegiant will be the 3rd instalment in the Divergent series. The film stars Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars, The Descendants), Theo James (Underworld: Awakening, The Inbetweeners Movie), Miles Teller (Whiplash, Fantastic Four) and Naomi Watts (King Kong, The Impossible). Here is the films synopsis: "Beatrice Prior and Tobias Eaton venture into the world outside of the fence and are taken into protective custody by a mysterious agency known as the Bureau of Genetic Welfare". So, I thought Insurgent was a step back for the franchise, is Allegiant a step back into the right direction? Allegiant hits cinemas March 18th 2016.

UK Box Office September 11-13: MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS Taken Out by LEGEND
2:28 PM
Surprisingly taking the top spot this weekend was the Tom Hardy flick Legend - Hardy definitely is on a comeback box office wise! That left Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials having to settle for second place. The sequel did however improve on its predecessor which I suppose is a good thing. The Visit took third place.
Also opening in the top 10 was Irrational Man which took 10th place. Secret Cinema returned to the top 10 at number 9.
Also opening in the top 10 was Irrational Man which took 10th place. Secret Cinema returned to the top 10 at number 9.
The Last Five Years is directed by Richard LaGravenese (P.S I Love You, Beautiful Creatures) and stars Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, Into the Woods) and Jeremy Jordan (Smash, Joyful Noise). "A struggling actress and her novelist lover each illustrate the struggle and deconstruction of their love affair". The film never reached the box office heights of Hairspray, Into The Woods, Mamma Mia or Les Miserables - does that mean audiences didn't like it or is it a jem many will find through home media?
Krampus is an upcoming 2015 release and is the first Christmas themed horror film in a very long time. The film is directed by Michael Dougherty (Superman Returns, X-Men 2) and stars Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation, Step Brothers), Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, Little Miss Sunshine) and Allison Tolman (The Gift, Fargo). Here is the films synopsis: "A boy who has a bad Christmas ends up summoning a Christmas demon to his family home". Is there a reason why studios rarely make Christmas themed horror movies? Krampus hits cinemas 4th December.
The Maze Was Just the Beginning
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is directed by Wes Ball (The Maze Runner) and is based on the book by James Dashner. The film stars Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner, Teen Wolf), Kaya Scodelario (Skins, The Maze Runner) and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Dark Knight Rises). "After having escaped the Maze, the Gladers now face a new set of challenges on the open roads of a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles". So I've read and enjoyed all 3 Maze Runner books, what will I think to my favourite book's adaption?
A Little Friendship Never Killed Anyone
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (The Town that Dreaded Sundown, American Horror Story) and stars Thomas Mann (Project X, Beautiful Creatures), RJ Cyler (Second Chances), Olivia Cooke (Ouija, The Signal) and Connie Britton (American Horror Story, American Ultra). "High schooler Greg, who spends most of his time making parodies of classic
movies with his co-worker Earl, finds his outlook forever altered after befriending a classmate who has just been diagnosed with cancer". Will Me & Earl & The Dying Girl have the magic of The Fault in Our Stars or will it just be another sugar-coated, sad love story?

UK Box Office September 4-6: STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Holds the Top Spot, TRANSPORTER isn't Refueled
10:22 AM
Holding the top spot for a second week in a row is Straight Outta Compton - the first number 1 movie in a while to stay at number 1!. The music bio-pic took in $2.1 million this quiet weekend. No Escape also opened in the top 5 at number 3 with just under $1 million. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl also cracked the top 5 at number 5 with $660,000.
Also opening within the top 10 was Transporter Refueled which took 7th place, taking in $540,000. Just behind in 8th was American Ultra which performed just as dismally with $530,000. Dope did not crack the top 10 which is probably due to such a limited release.
So Studio Spotlight returns this month - Universal have stepped into the limelight for this month's post. We will be covering Bad Neighbours 2, their record breaking Billion Dollar Movies, Ride Along 2 and more!. Expect another Studio Spotlight for Disney in the coming weeks as they definitely won August with D23.
Be Careful. Children at Play.
Sinister 2 is the sequel of the 2012 film and is directed by Ciaran Foy (Citadel). The film stars James Ransone (Sinister, Inside Man), Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight's Tale, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Robert Daniel Sloan and Dartanian Sloan (Hick). "A young mother and her twin sons move into a rural house that's marked for death". So Sinister was a disturbing and very scary movie, will Sinister 2 be able to match or surpass those heights?

UK Box Office August 28-30: STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Goes Straight to Top, WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS gets Unfriended!
12:46 PM
Opening at number 1 this weekend and sending Paper Towns 78% down was Straight Outta Compton. The music bio-pic took in $3.82 million this weekend which fits in very nicely to recent August releases. Hitman: Agent 47 didn't do that great though, taking in $1.47 million which put it in 3rd.
The only other opener within the top 10 was 45 Years which took the number 10 spot and earned $505K. Zac Efron flick We Are Your Friends failed to even make the cut for the top 10 which matches its dismal US release.
