The Revenant (2016) - Trailer #2 Review

1:46 PM

The Revenant is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman, Babel) and stars Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception, The Wolf of Wall Street), Tom Hardy (Legend, Mad Max: Fury Road) and Will Poulter (We're the Millers, The Maze Runner). "In the 1820s, a frontiersman, Hugh Glass, sets out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling". The Revenant has had production problems but is also DiCaprio's big shot for an Oscar - which will be clearer? The Revenant opens on December 25 2015 (limited) in the US and January 15 2016 in the UK.

Shot by Shot Analysis
0:20 - effective opening - the loud bang gets the audiences attention and will create quite a high pace energy
0:29 - the film looks like it is going to be beautiful to look at. Maybe a cinematography nomination? This shot in particular really makes it clear how big the area/set is which usually feels quite small unless it is created using CGI.
0:36 - last years big Oscar winner - will The Revenant be a best picture win for the director two years in a row?
0:40 - So Leonardo DiCaprio's technique to get an Oscar this time is to have a physical transformation
0:52 - it's Twilight ;)
0:59 - this scene is magnificent - it actually looks like a real human/bear encounter. The scene looks tense and action packed - I can't wait to see this in all its entirety
1:05 - I don't think this really adds anything. From what I've seen so far, it just doesn't really make me go 'omg this actually happened' as bear attacks I know have happened so the shock doesn't really work for me
1:19 - welcome Tom Hardy! - do you think if you weren't invited to The Big Short you went to this movie?
1:28 -  the trailer picks up its pace again - it creates a sense of mystery as it isn't very clear what is happening - I like that
1:29 - I would worry that this is a January release but in January you either get the scraps for the Oscar contenders - I think this is the latter
1:43 - DiCaprio looks like he has to express a lot of pain in this movie which could help him land a nomination.
1:53  - a beautiful shot. While I'm here I want to comment on the sound - I like how the breathing and music is in sync - this is quite effective and something I haven't seen done before. I also want to mention that The Revenant uses all natural lighting which if it is executed successfully, it will get some artistic merit
2:00 - I do think DiCaprio has to watch his back as I believe Hardy could steal the show - will it be a Foxcatcher situation where numerous actors from the same film end up in the same category?
2:12 - another beautiful shot. This film seems to be very action packed and fast paced for an awards contender - I like that!
2:28 - I think this is quite a weird way to show the titles as it seems to include subtle dialogue from the film in the background. It's as if this is the opening credit scene and they just went 'oh we can just use this for the trailer'.

I am very impressed with this trailer! The film look like its going to be another artistic film - Birdman was virtually one long take and this is all natural lighting. The film definitely has Oscar buzz and should have some nominations across all categories (acting, directing, cinematography etc). The trailer also portrays the film to be quite fast paced which would be a breath of fresh air for an awards film.
