Go Rogue
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is the 5th entry in the franchise and is directed by Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher). The film stars Tom Cruise (Edge of Tomorrow, Jack Reacher), Jeremy Renner (Avengers, The Bourne Legacy), Simon Pegg (Star Trek, The World's End) and Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules, The White Queen). "Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate - an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF". Was Brad Bird the vital ingredient for Ghost Protocol's success or can McQuarrie meet the quality or surpass it?

I really think that this is the best Mission Impossible movie yet! It is smart, full of amazing visuals and is action packed! Rogue Nation definitely fits in nicely to the series and is probably one of the best movies of the year. The Spy genre is killing it this year - I enjoyed Kingsman: The Secret Service and Spy - Rogue Nation has now been added to the list. Spectre and The Man From U.N.C.L.E have stiff competition. Rogue Nation is literally a perfect movie - I can't fault it.

After that amazing and iconic scene is Ghost Protocol - Cruise climbing the World's tallest building, Rogue Nation had to pull something out of the bag to beat it and it does!....with TWO amazing and mind blowing scenes. The first is in the trailers where Cruise is attached to the side of a plane - this was extra amazing as Cruise was actually attached to a plane! The second is when Cruise ventures into a underwater container - he has to jump in and only has 3 minutes until he dies - the tension is immense. This scene in particular kind of gave me Gravity vibes - you don't know how the main character is going to overcome the problem - it is literally impossible! The rest of the action sequences are also very good - the car chases are exciting and the fighting is entertaining. I really do prefer Ethan Hunt to James Bond as Hunt is up for literally anything and wants to have a good time.

The story was also very entertaining throughout and had plenty of twists and turns throughout. The first big reveal in the film was carried out really well and included some super cool technology. Pretty much all of the twists were hard to spot which meant I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. What I really liked about the film is that both Hunt and the audience are unaware the whole time where Ilsa's (Ferguson) loyalties lie - this made us question her every move and be very cautious of her.  My favourite scene in the whole film was the sequence where Hunt has to go underwater while Benji has to get through a super high-tech security system. Technology nerds will love this film even more!

I really liked some of the artistic choices that were made with the film - I liked how towards the end of the film, there were literally no noise which helped create tension for a certain moment. I also liked how this was similarly carried out during the water scene. Rogue Nation is one of them films that is completely unpredictable and the characters may do what you thought they wouldn't do. There is a particular scene that gave me vibes of The Purge trailers - when in Vienna, Hunt is tracking down somebody whilst an opera song plays in the background - this built tension also.

The acting was also very good in the film - I never really have anything bad to say about Tom Cruise because he is the definition of a Hollywood star. To make his status even better, the fact he does his own stunts is excellent and shows what a good sport he is! Cruise also makes his character likeable, entertaining and humorous. I was also really impressed with Rebecca Ferguson - she made much more of an impression than she did in last year's Hercules - I believe that it was down to her acting style for how cautious the audience were of her - this was extremely effective. Reiner and Pegg both did a good job also. I was also impressed with Sean Harris who was an excellent villain - he had a similar voice to Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending but it worked a lot better for his age and environment - I wouldn't be surprised if you see Harris pop up in other films as a villainous character.

Some may have thought it was impossible to top Ghost Protocol but I believe Rogue Nation passed the mission. Tom Cruise proves once again how much of a movie star he is and Rebecca Ferguson should make a big impression on Hollywood and audiences. The plot is full of twists that you don't see coming and the action is just amazing. Mission Complete.

5 STARS
A+
