These are films I watched in May, they may not be May releases
Pitch Perfect 2 - 'Pitch Perfect 2 is as good as its predecessor - it doesn't bring much new to the table but it strengthens what was already there. Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and the entire cast are extremely likeable and all have moments in the film that make you laugh. Elizabeth Banks has shown her credibility as a director and will likely stick around. Pitch Perfect 2 is successfully a musical with a fabulous soundtrack but is also a fantastic comedy with some of the best comedic moments in film in recent years. I would really recommend that you go and see this - get Pitch Slapped! - it doesn't hurt, it's actually quite enjoyable!'
It was another extremely tight race at the UK Box Office this weekend with both Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road closing with a photo-finish - the former continued its reign. Tomorrowland had a disappointing opening in 3rd place whilst Poltergeist performed nicely in 4th.
The only other entry within the top 10 came from 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' which performed extremely well in under 60 locations opening in 9th place.
Directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House, City of Ember), Poltergeist is a remake of the 1982 horror of the same name. The film stars Sam Rockwell (Moon, Iron Man 2), Rosemarie DeWitt (The Watch, The Odd Life of Timothy Green), Saxon Sharbino (Touch, I Spit on Your Grave), Kyle Catlett (The Following) and Kennedi Clements (Rogue). Will Poltergeist be able awaken the terrors of the 1980s classic for a new generation?
Tomorrowland is directed and written by Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) and stars George Clooney (Gravity, Ocean's Eleven), Britt Robertson (The Longest Ride, The First Time) and Raffey Cassidy (Mr. Selfridge). Tomorrowland is the latest instalment in the Disney live action empire - will it join the hall of fame or the hall of shame?
It was a tight race to the top spot this weekend but The Barden Bellas came out on top. Pitch Perfect 2 beat Mad Max: Fury Road and took first place. The film took in around $7.7 million whilst Mad Max took in around $7 million.
The only other new entry within the top 10 came from 'A Royal Night Out' - the film actually opened at 1 location last week but expanded nationwide with an underwhelming $467K which put it into 6th place.
Bad Blood is the 4th official single from Swift's multi-platinum release '1989'. Now you may be thinking, this is a movie blog - why are you reviewing a music video? Well I thought it was very interesting to see how a music video is using elements of so many films (including the marketing process) - the divide between music video and film seems to be fading. Bad Blood stars Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Kendrick Lamar, Lena Dunham, Hailee Steinfeld, Serayah, Gigi Hadid, Ellie Goulding, Martha Hunt, Cara Delevingne, Zendaya, Hayley Williams, Lily Aldridge, Karlie Kloss & Jessica Alba - this thing is HUGE! Does Bad Blood Live up to the hype?
Mad Max: Fury Road is the 4th instalment in the franchise but don't fret - the last one came out in 1985 and take it from someone who hadn't seen the other 3, you will be able to watch this one without seeing the rest of the series. The film is directed by George Miller (Mad Max, Happy Feet) and stars Tom Hardy (Child 44, The Dark Knight Rises), Charlize Theron (Snow White & The Huntsman, Monster), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Warm Bodies), Zoe Kravitz (Divergent, X:Men - First Class), Abbey Lee (Model), Rosie Huntington -Whitely (Model, Transformers: Dark of the Moon) and Riley Keough (The Runaways, Magic Mike) - can Mad Max: Fury Road re-energize the franchise?
Spooks: The Greater Good is directed by Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day) and stars Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones, Pompeii), Peter Firth (The Hunt For Red October), Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game, Jupiter Ascending), Jennifer Ehle (Fifty Shades of Grey, Zero Dark Thirty) and Eleanor Matsuura (Residue, Breaking and Entering). Is this a necessary silver screen adaption of a beloved TV show?
Are you ready to get Pitch Slapped? Pitch Perfect 2 is the directorial debut from Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) and stars audience favourites Anna Kendrick (Into the Woods), Rebel Wilson (Night at the Museum 3), Ester Dean, Flula Borg, Hailee Steinfeld and many others. 'After a humiliating command performance at Lincoln Center, the Barden Bellas enter an international competition that no American group has ever won in order to regain their status and right to perform'. Will this be a typical sequel or will it improve on its predecessor?
Avengers: Age of Ultron held on to the top spot for a third week in a row - taking in just below $5.5 million. Despite the lack of promotion, Spooks: The Greater Good surprised predictions and opened in second with $1.5 million. The Age of Adaline also managed to crack the top 5 with $893K.
Also opening within the chart was Big Game which debuted at number 7 with $839K.
The World has Changed in the Last Century. Adaline has Not.
The Age of Adaline is directed by Lee Toland Krieger (The Vicious Kind) and stars Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) and Michiel Huisman (Wild, World War Z) and Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones, Star Wars). The film is about 'A young woman, born at the turn of the 20th century, who is rendered ageless after an accident. After many solitary years, she meets a man who complicates the eternal life she has settled into.' The Age of Adaline is a fantasy romance - will it be magical or will it be as dull as watching paint dry?
Avengers: Age of Ultron held on to the top spot for a second week in a row this week - taking in $13 million. Surprising us all with a solid entry at number 2 is Far From the Madding Crowd - the film took in $2.2 million which is really good for this type of movie. Unfriended also did solid business, opening at number 3 with $2 million.
The only other entry within the top 10 was the animated flop Two by Two - the film opened at number 7 with a modest but disappointing $864K.
Selena Gomez is a 22 year old actress and singer. She has to be one of my favourite actresses and singers out there! I think she has a really likeable personality and truly cares about her fans. This blog post is a pilot and this kind of thing could become a segment on the blog. I will be ranking all of Gomez's feature films in order of worst to best - I will give a little reason for why it is in the position it is. The only Gomez films I've been able to review on here are Spring Breakers and Rudderless so you will get a view on what I think of all of her movies so far! Let's Go!
Unfriended is directed by Levan Gabriadze (Yolki 2, Lucky Trouble) and stars Shelley Hennig (Ouija, The Secret Circle), Jacob Wysocki (Pitch Perfect, Terri), Renee Olstead (The Secret Life of an American Teenager), Will Peltz (In Time, The Collection), Moses Storm and Heather Sossaman. 'A group of online chat room friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.' The marketing for the film says that it 'revolutionises' the horror genre, similarly to The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity - but does it do it successfully? Will Unfriended be blocked or accepted?
