Crimson Peak: Thoughts Based on Trailer

5:33 AM

On Friday 13th February (great timing for a horror trailer), Universal and Legendary Pictures released the first official teaser trailer for the highly anticipated 'Crimson Peak'.  If you haven't seen it yet, you can watch it on this post by clicking on the video that is on the right hand side of this post.

Note - I am changing the way I write my 'thoughts based on trailer' posts. It will be more a review instead of a narration :)

The trailer is very very dark and gothic. This theme is helped by a great soundtrack choice -  'Red Right Hand' is very eery and really helps create a gothic and creepy tone. The costuming is also very dated which really helps build on the dark theme (Early Prediction - Could this be in the running for Best Costuming at the Oscars 2016?).

There is also use of creepy dolls. Even though this isn't that original, the effect never seems to get old and they still manage to make you feel uneasy. The one that this film uses is especially quite creepy and one that I haven't seen used before.

The haunted house also looks very good - could Crimson Peak be a 'best set design' front runner too? The interior of the house matches the exterior also - it is nice to see this as films like 'The Woman in Black' visit an abandoned house that looks terrifying from the outside but creepy and dusty from the inside - Crimson Peak's haunted house is home to real life people and looks beautiful.

One of the scariest moments in the trailer is when a strange body comes out of the floor boards. I can already tell that in the actual film, this is going to be very effective. There is also a good clip of when the girl is lying in bed and a hand creeps up her shoulder. The trailer ends with a very scary voice saying 'beware of Crimson Peak' - this leaves the viewer (or me anyway) quite creeped out and chills ran up my spine.

Overall, I really like how this film trailer doesn't overuse jump scares (it doesn't actually use any) which fellow critics have criticised about horror films. I can really see that Guillermo del Toro has really created a masterpiece and I cannot wait to watch this. This is the first horror film in a long time that actually looks of a good quality (since The Conjuring & The Babadook) and has a very big leading cast - Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain & Mia Wasikowska look like great picks for this.

Overall Consensus: Crimson Peak is either going to be the most magnificent horror film for a long time or a very slow, eery drama. Which ever one it will be? - I will definitely being going out to see it hoping for the former.

Will you be watching CRIMSON PEAK in October? Will it be a horror or a drama? - COMMENT BELOW
