UK Box Office August 14-16: Game On for PIXELS, MAN FROM UNCLE Fails to Complete Mission

10:25 AM

Surprisingly opening in first place and taking the UK box office crown was Pixels. The film took in $4.17 million - however, don't be too surprised by this large number as Pixels' weekend figures are made up of Wednesday to Sunday and previous previews - a clever move from Sony. The Man From U.N.C.L.E took 4th with a lacklustre $2.27 million and Trainwreck took 5th with an impressive $1.46 million considering most of the UK don't know who Amy Schumer is.

Also opening in the top 10 was 'Absolutely Anything' which opened in 9th. The Simon Pegg flopped both critically and financially - the film took in a mere $760,000.

Here is the top 10:
1. Pixels - $4.17 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $4.17 million
2. Inside Out - $3.00 million - Week 4 - Down 2% - Total: $42.97 million
3. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - $2.48 million - Week 3 - Down 34% - Total: $23.10 million
4. The Man From U.N.C.L.E - $2.27 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $2.27 million
5. Trainwreck - $1.46 million - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $1.46 million
6. Fantastic Four - $1.10 million - Week 2 - Down 74% - Total: $7.58 million
7. Southpaw - $980,948 - Week 4 - Down 21% - Total: $11.03 million
8. Minions - $911,581 - Week 8 - Up 13% - Total: $67.77 million
9. Absolutely Anything - $763,574 - Week 1 - NEW - Total: $763,574
10. The Gift - $518,339 - Week 2 - Down 43% - Total: $2.27 million

The top 10 made $17.65 million this week which is up 12.77% on last weekend but is also down 9.2% on the same time frame last year.

Pixels took first place this weekend with $4.17 million. The film had previews last weekend and opened on Wednesday which means this number is made up of at least 7 days of release. Sony kind of needed this 'win' as the film has been ripped apart by critics and neglected by audiences in the US. Pixels will probably take a steep drop next weekend but still has a shot at hitting $10 million.

Dropping just 2% this weekend was Inside Out - the acclaimed Pixar animation climbed back to the number 2 spot and took in $3 million. The film has so far made $42.97 million and is on track to close with around $50 million+. Now the Summer holidays are coming to a close, Inside Out may see steeper drops - the film still has no competition though until Hotel Transylvania 2.

Dropping a light 34% this weekend was Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. The film took in $2.48 million and has so far made $23.1 million in the UK. Fellow spy film, The Man From UNCLE failed to beat Rogue Nation so this film still has a strong shot at surpassing $30 million.

Opening in 4th place this weekend was The Man From U.N.C.L.E. The film didn't fair too well in the US either which suggests that neither Superman or The Lone Ranger are draws to the box office in the UK. The Man From UNCLE has received solid reviews (67% on Rotten Tomatoes) which suggests it could hold reasonably well. UNCLE took in $2.27 million and could go on to surpass $10 million.

Opening in 5th place this weekend was Trainwreck. The acclaimed comedy took in $1.46 million this weekend which may seem underwhelming at first but once you take into account that Schumer's profile is very small in the UK, this debut is pretty good. Trainwreck will also hold pretty well and could go on to surpass $6 million by the end of its run.

6. Fantastic Four - Here today, gone tomorrow. Prediction: $10 million.

7. Southpaw - another solid hold for the film. Prediction: $13 million.

8. Minions - an increase for the animated flick.  Prediction: $70 million.

9. Absolutely Anything - Another Simon Pegg flop. Prediction: $1.5 million.

10. The Gift - Despite dropping 5 spots, another horror holds well. Prediction: $3.5-4.5 million.
