The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015)

He's Leaving His World Behind

Directed by Paul Tibbitt (SpongeBob Squarepants) and starring Tom Kenny (SpongeBob Squarepants), Bill Fagerbakke (SpongeBob Squarepants), Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) and Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots). 'When a diabolical pirate above the sea steals the secret Krabby Patty formula, SpongeBob and his nemesis Plankton must team up in order to get it back'. 10 years on from the first SpongeBob movie, will this sequel float or sink?

The plot of this film is pretty silly - its basically about retrieving a burger recipe that goes missing. However, as this is SpongeBob, I think the writers can be forgiven as they aren't really known for creating the most meaningful and Oscar-winning story lines are they? Other than the silly premises, the story does move quite fast. Also, just as the film starts to feel like an overlong episode of SpongeBob, it takes a fun turn as the characters are transported into the real world. This was quite funny to see - it was like 'Enchanted' but the cartoon sequence is far longer than the live action parts (the opposite of Enchanted). I think the story could have been a little more clever and less stupid but its SpongeBob and all he has in his brain is cotton candy - what more can you expect?

The animation was quite weak but it stuck to the quality of the animated series which is good for long term SpongeBob fans as it keeps the cartoon style that they love. However, for someone like me who isn't a massive fan of SpongeBob, I think that this is no competition for the animation of Big Hero 6, How to Train Your Dragon 2 or even The LEGO Movie.

There were some very witty moments in this film that did make me laugh. It was just generally a fun film - it wasn't terrible but it wasn't good enough to recommend. Adults in the audience laughed just as much as the children which shows that it does have elements that are appealing to all ages.

The cast were all brilliant. I'm pretty sure that they are still all of the original voiceovers from the current animated series which once again will please dedicated fans of the TV show. This part only applies to UK audiences but I really enjoyed the voices of the seagulls from Joe Sugg, Alan Carr, Casper Lee & Stacey Solomon. They were some of the biggest players in making the audience laugh. Antonio Banderas was also very good.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water spends most of its time in the water. The animation and voice cast will please long term fans but the former may annoy new viewers as it isn't to the quality of the latest animated entries. The story is silly and other ideas could have worked better and the film appeals to all ages. Sponge Out of Water is a fun movie - its not brilliant but its certainly not terrible either.
