UK Box Office March 13-15: MARIGOLD HOTEL 3peats, RUN ALL NIGHT finishes in Second

1:41 PM

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has another weekend at number 1 with just over $2 million. Run All Night opened in second place to $1.2 million. Suite Francaise also opened in the top 5 in 4th with $740K.

Home had a preview release this weekend and would have been at the top spot - however previews are not counted in the top 10. Home opens wide next weekend. No other new films opened within the top 10.

Bad news guys, the top 10 made just $8.57 million this weekend which is the worst weekend in a long time. This is also down 33.10% on last weekend and also down 34.74% on the same time frame last year.

Holding on to number 1 this weekend is The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which dropped 30% and took in $2.08 million. This has to be thanks to Mothers Day as this is probably the most appealing choice for any mothers. The film has now made $17.3 million in the UK and should go on to reach the mid $20 millions. This is also basically on par with what the first instalment of this franchise made ($2.85 million). However, the first film had earned $17.33 million by its third weekend which suggests that this one is not going to go on to surpass the first hotel.

Opening in second place is Liam Neeson action flick Run All Night. The film took in $1.21 million. This is the lowest Neeson debut in a long time. The film has had middling reviews which suggests it could hold fairly well. $5 million is a likely closing point for this.

Focus is in third and took in $1.19 million. That is down 40% on last weekend which is an ok drop. I recently saw Focus and you can check out my review here. The film has now made over $8.3 million in the UK. It has already surpassed my first weekend prediction so I now see the film ending with or just below $10 million. Focus could beat Will Smith's last major release 'After Earth' ($9.7 million).

The second highest debut came in 4th this weekend - Suite Francaise. The film took in $740K - it is rare that a film earns under a million in the top 5. The film has had strong reviews (Around 70% on Rotten Tomatoes) and will probably be a favourite for older viewers - could perform not as well but similarly in drops to the Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. This film could earn around $5 million by the end of its run.

Dropping a steep 55% is Fifty Shades of Grey which took 5th place. The film made $718K which brings its total to $49.8 million. The film will definitely surpass $50 million. With these steep drops, $55 million is seeming unreachable.

Last weeks new entry, Chappie dropped a very steep 57% this weekend and took in $660K. This brings its new total to $2.93 million. This is very weak. It will not or may just hit $5 million by the end of its run and should close with $4-5 million. This is very disappointing - it makes the performances of Elysium and District 9 look record breaking.

In 7th place is Still Alice - up one spot on last weekend. This is also up 2%. The film took in $618K. This brings the films total to $1.62 million. This is very impressive for an arthouse and independent film. The UK must have really caught on to Julianne Moore's award wins. I don't know how long Still Alice will stay in the top 10 but I think it will ultimately reach $3-4 million which will be remarkable.

In 8th place is Big Hero 6 which is down 54% - a steep drop. Will the film manage to stay in the top 10 next week with big new animated release HOME? Also, easter holidays are just around the corner so the film could benefit once again from that. The film took in $570K this weekend which brings its total to $28.17 million. $30 million should be a likely closing point.

Kingsman: The Secret Service fell just 37% which is the strongest drop is the top 10. The film took in $430K and has a new total of $23.27 million. This is brilliant and thanks to strong performances overseas, a sequel seems likely. The film should close with or just below $25 million.

Rounding out the top 10 is Shaun the Sheep Movie. The film dropped a huge 62% making just $346K. The film has a new total of $18.76 million and should close with just below $20 million.

Next week will be an interesting battle between HOME and INSURGENT.
Other releases come from The Gunman, Wild Card & The Voices
